(MG1, MG2, ZOE, Snatcher) |
Snake can destroy the
PMC's
power generator, recalling several other instances of resource
destruction
in the Metal Gear Saga. See Snake's destruction of electric floor
switches
in MG1, his destruction of the electric floor power switchboard in
MGS1,
and Raiden's similar action in MGS2. |
Ocelot and Naomi steal
Snake's
blood for the purpose of their SOP destabilization experiments,
recalling
Liquid Snake's plan to abate the Genome soldiers' genetic symmetry
problems
with Snake's blood. |
As a married couple,
Campbell
and Rose appear identified as a unit and share the same Codec
frequency,
recalling their similar identification and shared Codec frequency at
the end of MGS2. |
Snake rescues a scientist
trapped against her will in a forest-bound facility, much as Naked
Snake
had rescued Sokolov under similar circumstances. |
Act II's powered suits
draw
their designs specifically from Policenauts, but they also fall into
a longer trend of soldiers with enhanced mobility within the Metal
Gear
Saga. See MG1's flying suit soldiers and MGS3's flying platform
soldiers. |
Snake meets Naomi after
fighting through several waves of enemies, recalling an unwavering
trope
of Meeting-The-Scientist within the Metal Gear Saga. See Snake's
meeting
with Dr. Madnar in MG1, his meeting with the same in MG2, his meeting
with Otacon in MGS1, Raiden's meeting with Emma in MGS2, and Naked
Snake's
meetings with Sokolov and Granin in MGS3. |
Act II's escape sequences
features Snake firing a turret gun through multiple checkpoints and
using oil drum explosions to clear out enemies and physical barriers.
This recalls the features of Solid Snake's escape from Shadow Moses
with Meryl or Otacon.
The escape sequence's second phase resembles the second phase of
MGS1's
escape sequence. Otacon warns Snake that the Gekko will try to ram
Drebin's
armored car, recalling Liquid Snake's identical strategy within Shadow
Moses Island's access tunnel. Snake's vehicle even turns on its side
after the final stage of the chase. |
Laughing Octopus kills
rebel
soldiers in order to frame Snake, much as Cypher photographs had
framed
Snake for sinking the Tanker in MGS2. |
Snake infiltrates a forest
scenario, beginning several miles away from his target, recalling the
environment and progression of MGS3. Act II's opening shots even show
large centipedes scuttling over Snake as actual snakes had over Naked
Snake in MGS3 trailers. |
The power plant and
mansion
resemble the aesthetic, layout, and purpose of MPO's power plant and
other modern, non-militarized indoor areas. (Similar areas rarely
appear
elsewhere in the Saga.) |
Naomi's character design
features a long vertical slit in her labcoat, recalling similar
designs
for female characters in the Metal Gear Saga. See Sniper Wolf,
Fortune,
EVA, and The Boss. |
Raiden warns Snake about
ambushes during the tracking sequence, recalling Gray Fox's warnings
about Claymore landmines. |
Vamp's character design
references his former Dead Cell comrades. He wears a tailored version
of Solidus's cloak, a sleeve from Fatman's bomb-blast suit, and the
lower half of the Tengu unit's uniform. He also exhibits Fortune's
suicidal
tendencies.. |
Act II's opening camera
shot descends into the forest canopy, recreating a slower experience
of Naked Snake's two descents into the Soviet jungle. Snake appears
with a large centipede crawling over him before apparently springing
to life, recalling The End's actions at the start of his fight in
MGS3. |
Snake's ability to free
rebel hostages recalls the hostage rescue element of MG1's gameplay,
when Snake needed to free captives in Outer Heaven to progress. |
Raiden's fight against
Vamp
is a hyperactive version of the Saga's rivalry fight trope. See
Snake's
fight against Gray Fox in MG2, his fight against Liquid Snake in MGS1,
Raiden's fight against Solidus in MGS2, and Naked Snake's fight
against
The Boss in MGS3. |
Act II nudges the player
to use sniping tactics near the communication buildings, recalling
Snake's
sniper battles against Wolf near MGS1's communication towers. |
Snake watches someone
impersonate
him, recalling Solidus's use of Snake's reputation as a cover in MGS2. |
The audience sees a snake
eating a small mammal, visually evoking the eating and survival
gameplay
design of MGS3. |
Another bulldozer appear
during Act II, recalling the bulldozer boss from MG1 and the sewer
cleaning
machines from MG2. |
Fight between Vamp and
Raiden
is essentially a cutscene version (with blades) of the sorts of
one-on-one,
hand-to-hand fights that occur throughout the series between rivals
(Gray Fox and Snake, Liquid and Solid Snake, The Boss and Naked Snake,
Ocelot and Naked Snake). |
Naomi has Snake strip for
examination, recalling his strip exam under her watch aboard the USS
Discovery. |
Laughing Octopus tortures
rebel soldiers much as Solidus had tortured Raiden atop Arsenal Gear. |
Otacon reports that Mei
Ling "caught the eye of some lecherous old admiral who got her
promoted," recalling Raikov's fast promotions under Volgin's
leadership. |
The company name printed
on Raiden's visor, "Tokugawa Heavy Industries," refers to
a manufacturing corporation in Snatcher. |
|
Snake asks Naomi how long
he has to live so he can complete his mission, recalling his identical
question to her after learning about FoxDie in MGS1. |
Snake attributes Vamp's
powers to technology rather than the supernatural, recalling both
MGS2's
videogame self-consciousness ("This is the real world, not some
fantasy game.") along with Ocelot's disavowal of supernatural forces
("There's no such thing as supernatural mumbo-jumbo. Only cutting
edge technology!") |
The action music for Act
II sounds derived from the MGS3 track "Into the Jungle" by
Norihiko Hibino. |
Naomi's dual role as a
Rescued
Scientist and as a traitor recalls Dr. Madnar's role in Metal Gear 2. |
|
Raiden wears a long brown
trenchcoat, recalling identical coats worn by MGS1's Foxhound. |
Otacon tells Snake about
Mei Ling's history, as he had during Codec conversations aboard the
Tanker. |
Snake enters the South
American
jungle at dawn and leaves sometime mid afternoon, recalling the
one-day
timeframe of Naked Snake's Virtuous Mission. |
|
|
The Gekkos bind Raiden in
place with wires as he undergoes Vamp's torture. This recalls Armstech
President Kenneth Baker's binding with C4 wires after having been
tortured
by Ocelot. |
Act II's South American
costume closely resembles Snake's Seal Team 10 costume (with
balaclava). |
Act II features areas with
varying elevations, salt flats, and a smattering of houses. These
areas
recall both the Bolshaya and Svatogornyj regions in MGS3, both of
which
had ares with varying elevations, mud swamps, and rustic cabins. |
|
|
Raiden bloodily massacres
Gekkos in the South American alley, recalling Gray Fox's massacre of
Genome soldiers in the Blood Hallway leading to Otacon's lab. |
Posters of Akina Minami
within the mansion recall MGS2's pinup posters. |
Snake can use installed
turrets against enemies, recalling Naked Snake's access to similar
weapons
in Bolshaya Past Base. |
|
|
Vamp's call to Ocelot
recalls
Raven's conversation with Liquid after Snake had destroyed his M-1
tank:
"Boss, he got away. Are you sure about this?" |
Posters of Akina Minami
suggest the pinup posters that litter MGS2. |
Snake can infiltrate the
power station through the floor, much as Naked Snake could escape
Sokolov's
room in the burned out factory through a floor panel. |
|
|
Raiden sacrifices himself
to save Snake from a horde of new Metal Gear weapons, recalling Gray
Fox's self-sacrifice to save Snake from Rex. |
MGs4 becomes teasingly
self-conscious
after Raiden contacts Snake, recalling MGS2's fourth-wall meltdown
after
Raiden's capture within Arsenal Gear. We see:
(1) A crop circle with the AI Colonel's voiceover directly lifted from
MGS2;
(2) A Japanese eye chart discoverable while looking hard for clues of
Naomi's whereabouts;
(3) A voice recording of Naomi to throw Snake off her trail;
(4) A plaque on the ground featuring signatures and handprints of
MGS4's
senior development staff.
All of these self-conscious tricks surface after Raiden contacts Snake
and insists that Rose doesn't exist. |
Act II introduces the same
Brick Camo pattern for OctoCamo that appeared early in MGS3. |
|
|
|
Snake shoots Vamp in the
forehead unexpectedly, recalling Raiden's similar act at the base of
Strut A. Further similarities between the scenarios reinforce the
association:
(1) Vamp remains "dead" until the heroes escape;
(2) Vamp had been conversing with his leader on the phone immediately
before getting shot;
(3) Snake shoots Vamp in the exact same spot where Raiden had shot
him. |
Active enemy helicopters
in the area suggest the Hinds that patrolled the Krasnogorje mountain
areas of MGS3. |
|
|
|
A Flashback Event likens
Little Gray to an alien gray, recalling the post-MGS2 suspicion that
the Patriots might be extraterrestrial. |
Snake encounters a
building
in a fortified area only accessible via ladder, recalling the access
route to The Fury. |
|
|
|
Choreography of scene
wherein
Snake uses the DSR-1 to break one of the Gekkos' sensor wires that
binds
Raiden is reminiscent of Snake's cutscene attack against Solidus with
a rifle grenade launcher attachment from the bay door of the Russian
helicopter right before the Harrier fight on the Shell 1-2 Connecting
Bridge. |
Snake finds Muna herb to
replenish his Psyche Gauge, recalling the medicinal herbs that Naked
Snake could harvest during Operation Snake Eater. |
|
|
|
Raiden casts away his
jacket
to blind a Gekko much as Ocelot had cast away his at the end of the
Tanker chapter to blind Gurlukovich and Dolph. |
The Vista Mansion's indoor
environment suggests the furnished areas of Graniny Gorki lab. |
|
|
|
Otacon pilots and lands
a chopper for rescue, recalling his rescuing of hostages at the end
of MGS2. |
A secret L1 scene during
Snake's encounter with Naomi recalls Naked Snake's similar peeping
opportunity
with EVA during MGS3. |
|
|
|
Vamp scrawls across
Raiden's
chest diagonally, recalling his self-mutilation after slaying the
Seals
in the Big Shell. |
Snake's ambush by the
Frogs
in the cabin lab recalls Naked Snake's ambush by the Ocelot Unit in
the burned out factory. |
|
|
|
Vamp pins Raiden's foot
to the ground, recalling his "shadow binding" attack from
MGS2. |
Snake tracks Naomi and
captors
using environmental cues in a forest with a river much as Naked Snake
had with The End during Operation Snake Eater. |
|
|
|
Raiden does not have his
natural blood, recalling the filtration of his natural blood from his
body prior to MGS2. |
Drebin's breakneck driving
through Gekkos suggests EVA's breakneck cycle-driving away from the
Shagohod. |
|
|
|
|
Drebin zigzags Snake
through
areas previously traversed on foot while avoiding foot soldiers and
high powered vehicles, recalling EVA's escort of Naked Snake back
through
Groznyj Grad. |
|
|
|
|
Naomi equates Snake with
a blue rose, which resembles MGS3's equation of The Boss with a white
flower petal and of Naked Snake's regret with a red flower petal. |
|
