(MG1, MG2, ZOE, Snatcher) |
Rex and Ray brawl at the
landing docks of Shadow Moses, recalling the Saga's "final brawl"
trope. See Snake's fight against Gray Fox in Metal Gear 2, his fight
against Liquid Snake in MGS1, Raiden's fight against Solidus in MGS2,
and Naked Snake's fights against Volgin and The Boss in MGS3. |
During Act IV's Briefing,
the Mk.II eavesdrops upon a conversation between Vamp and Ocelot. This
recalls Snake's eavesdropping upon a conversation between Liquid and
Ocelot outside the control room of Rex's hangar. Vamp is Ocelot's
lieutenant
as Ocelot had been Liquid's, and MGS4 places Ocelot in a trenchcoat
with his back facing the camera (as Liquid had been in MGS1). |
Players are escorted
around
routes and locations familiar from MGS1, recalling how MGS2 had
thwarted
player's expectations of a sequel to MGS1. |
MGS4 makes playable the
second sneaking segment of MGS1 as Snake's recurring dream, recalling
the Guy Savage minigame as Naked Snake's dream when imprisoned in
Groznyj
Grad. |
Players can interact with
MGS1's environment using enhanced gameplay developments, recalling the
similar intentions of the Gamecube remake The Twin Snakes. |
Vamp's boss fight fulfills
a boss trope in the Metal Gear Saga, wherein the hero battles a
character
who is connected to the main unit of enemies by circumstance rather
than affiliation. See Gray Fox in Metal Gear 2, the Cyborg Ninja in
MGS1, Olga (not a member of Dead Cell) in MGS2, and Young Ocelot in
MGS3. |
Snake pulls away the patch
covering his facial scars, recalling the removal of Mantis's mask in
MGS1's Commander's Office. (Sunny and Otacon likewise react with
revulsion
as Meryl had in MGS1.) |
The Mk.III's bird-like
presence
in Hal's old lab suggests Emma's parrot in the lab of MGS2's Shell 1
Core. |
Rex and Ray battle by
circling
each other in a large arena, recalling the bike portion of Naked
Snake's
final showdown against the Shagohod. |
Vamp's boss fight tactics
resemble Gene's from MPO as well as his own from MGS2: he throws
knives,
dodges bullets, and performs high speed moves resembling Gene's
teleportation
attacks. |
Otacon's love interest
dies
yet again, recalling his failed affairs from MGS1 and MGS2. |
Act IV's "all clear"
sound effect following Alert and Evasion modes recalls the identical
sound effect used in MGS1. |
Vamp coyly refers to Naomi
as "my queen," recalling his similar nickname for Fortune. |
Snake's doggedness in
accepting
responsibility for Ocelot's control of SOP recalls the responsibility
that Naked Snake took for The Boss's defection during Virtuous
Mission. |
MGS4 positions Dwarf
Gekkos
in almost all the same locations where mechanical sensors had appeared
in MGS1. |
Snake fights a barrage of
Gekkos while Raiden battles Vamp atop Rex. This recalls Raiden's fight
against the stream of 22 Rays while Snake fought Fortune within
Arsenal
Gear. |
Sunny refuses to let
Raiden
go into battle while he's injured, recalling Paramedic's complaint
that
Naked Snake had returned to the field without adequately recovering
from injuries gathered during Virtuous Mission. |
Rats will lead Snake to
ducts and hidden caches of items, as they had in MGS1. |
Raiden cuts air with his
sword after knocking Vamp off Rex, recalling his identical movement
after knocking Solidus off the roof of Federal Hall. |
If Dwarf Gekkos discover
Snake during Act IV, they stream into the area in large numbers,
recalling
the way that enemies swarmed Snake upon discovering in MGS1 rather
than
the less automatically spawning enemies of MGS2 and MGS3. |
Vamp taunts Snake during
his boss fight to kill him, recalling Fortune's identical taunts at
the base of Strut A in the Big Shell. |
Ravens appear in almost
every indoor section of the game, recalled more poignantly than
elsewhere
in MGS4 Vulcan Raven's last words "Hear me, Snake! I will be watching
you." |
Ocelot escapes aboard
Outer
Haven by elevating above Snake and promising him a watery grave,
recalling
his similar escape and promise at the end of MGS2's Tanker Chapter. |
Gekko await embedded under
snow in the field between the Tank Hangar and the Warhead Storage
Facility.
This recalls the stealth-hidden Claymores found in that area during
MGS1. Likewise, Snake can only see the Gekkos beforehand by using the
Solid Eye's ENV Mode, recalling the value of Infrared Goggles in
detecting
Claymores in MGS1. |
Snake fires at Ocelot from
a lower elevation but cannot hit him, recalling the orientation of
Ocelot's
failed attacks against Ocelot at the end of MGS2. |
Snake can backtrack to the
Tank Hangar and collect new items after visiting Hal's lab, recalling
the backtracking between those areas that MGS1 had required. |
The Haven runs aground
Shadow
Moses, recalling Arsenal Gear's crash into Manhattan. |
When Snake hits the
elevator's
call button, the camera will tighten over his shoulder as it had in
MGS1. It will also arrive more quickly if he taps the button twice,
as it had in MGS1. |
Act IV requires Snake to
take several side-routes in order to unlock previously inaccessible
areas, recalling Snake's many side-excursions in MGS1 to acquire PAN
cards. MGS4 reinforces this association with a Flachback Event
featuring
MGS1's Level 2 PAN card. |
Snake must wait on the
Mk.III
to open the Warhead Disposal Facility's bay doors. This recalls two
moments from MGS1: first, when Snake waited for Meryl to open the Tank
Hangar's shutter door; second, when Snake waited for Otacon to hack
open the door to the Rex hangar's control room. |
Raiden and Vamp battle in
a form of hand-to-hand combat atop Metal Gear Rex as Liquid and Solid
Snake had in MGS1. Vamp falls to his demise as Liquid had but,
appropriate,
does not actually die until the plot lets him. |
Crying Wolf dies in the
same location on the Snowfield's map where Sniper Wolf had died. |
Otacon's Codec
conversations
consist of nostaligic recollections of the events of MGS1, suggesting
the player's own likely nostalgia with the experience. |
If Snake dies during Act
IV, MGS4 plays MGS1's classic Game Over music. |
Shots of Snake and the
Mk.III
riding Rex's maintenance elevator resemble those from Rex's activation
in MGS1. |
If Snake aims his weapon
at Vamp while he and Raiden battle atop Rex, he will refuse to attack
with the same lines when attacking Liquid would have killed Gray Fox
in MGS1: "It's no good, I can't shoot. It's no good. I can't do
it!" |
Raiden saves Snake from
being crushed by a Gekko as Gray Fox had saved him from Rex in MGS1. |
Raiden severs his arm to
save Snake, recalling Gray Fox's lost arm while saving Snake in MGS1. |
Raiden appears to die when
Haven crushes him, recalling Gray Fox's death when Liquid crushed him
with Rex. |
Snake and Otacon leave
Naomi
dead as Shadow Moses crashes to rubble, recalling the bad ending of
MGS1. |
Snake pilots Metal Gear
Rex with its mouth hanging open, visually recalling Liquid Snake's
role
as pilot during the second phase of MGS1's Rex fight. |
The entire "Fox...
Die!" sequence at the end of Act IV parodies the ending of MGS1. |
When Raiden jumps off
Rex's
lip to help, the camera shot flashes white much as LENS FLARE heralded
the appearance of the ninja in MGS1. |
The screen blanches white
when Raiden jumps off Rex's lip during Act IV's escape sequence,
recalling
the lens flare effects that attended Gray Fox's arrival during MGS1's
Rex fight. |
Raiden leaves an impact
crater in Outer Haven's hull, recalling the impact crater made in the
wall of Rex's Hangar when Gray Fox sacrificed himself for Snake. |
Otacon forgets the
activation
code needed to power up Shadow Moses, recalling Baker's forgetting of
Meryl's radio frequency. MGS4 reinforces this association when it has
Otacon retrieve the information from a handwritten note, much as MGS1
had required the player to refer to the game's packaging for Meryl's
frequency. |
The Mk.II's remote control
function suggests a MGS1 ranged weapon, the Nikita missile launcher.
The Mk.II's FPV interface resembles the Nikita's, and MGS4 forces the
player to enter this FPV while travelling under scattered desks en
route
to the electric floor's switchboard. Rather than disarming the
switchboard,
however, the player uses a similar tactic and interface to reactivate
it briefly. |
Snake pursues Ocelot with
an assault rifle and an injured leg after the Rex and Ray fight,
recalling
Liquid's similar approach to Snake and his cohort at the end of MGS1. |
